Diets don't work. Scratch that. Diets do work. For a very short period of time. Over 80% of people who lose weight on a diet gain the weight back within a year (and usually more!). 1. You aren't eating enough

Even if you were to lay in bed all day, your body would still burn calories. The number of calories your body needs to perform the most basic functions like breathing, sleeping, or thinking is known as your “basal metabolic rate,” and this number can be anywhere from 1000-1600 calories depending on your age and sex. If you're following a plan that's restricting your intake to 1000 calories a day, your body simply won't keep up long-term.



2. You cut out entire food groups

Are you eating only protein and vegetables all day long? Are you tossing the egg yolks? Is bread a no-no? Is sugar off limits? If you're cutting out foods or entire food groups, not only will you be missing out on important nutrients, but you'll also be sacrificing your sanity. We'll have our cake and eat it too, please!'



3. You don't cook your own meals

Not only is drinking green juice all day long, living off of frozen entrees, or eating diet products that taste like cardboard gross, unappealing, and not sustainable, it's costly and unlikely you can keep shelling out the metaphorical dough beyond a few months. Once you cut ties with the bland garbage, you'll be left with zero practical skills to make healthy choices in real life. That's where the real trouble starts.



4. You overhaul your diet overnight

Starting Monday you go from eating a burger and fries for dinner to eating a small garden salad with fresh vegetables, 3 oz. white fish, and a teaspoon of olive oil. Pretty unrealistic, right? Overhauling your diet overnight is unrealistic and can feel very restrictive. When you feel restricted, you're more likely to lash out. Slow and steady wins the weight loss race -- making small changes every day is the best way to make a lasting change.



5. You get extreme results in a short amount of time

Losing 10 lbs in 2 weeks is possible. But yikes! Chances are if the pounds are melting off this quickly, what you’re doing is not healthy. In general, the quicker you lose the weight, the quicker you’ll gain it back.



6. Or make no changes at all

Ever heard of a magic pill that will help you lose weight without lifting a finger? I don't know of about you, but we don't even want to think how much damage is going on inside. That's if it does anything at all! If you do see the scale shift, it's probably a few pounds of water weight, which you'll "gain back" as soon as you rehydrate.

In short diets focus on making short-term changes – eat this, not that. While what we eat is important, following a structured meal plan and changing the way we eat alone is not enough to keep us going in the long-run. Diets don’t look at the deep-rooted thoughts, emotions, and feelings that impact our food choices in the first place. Diets don’t ask why we reach for a bag of chips instead of an apple.
